The basics

What is the difference between translation and interpretation?

Translation deals with the written word, while interpretation deals with the spoken word.

A translator translates a document from one language (the source text) into another language (the target language). An interpreter facilitates communication between people who speak different languages. For example, an interpreter may listen to someone speaking Urdu and interpret what they said into English for another person.

Can any bilingual individual be an interpreter or translator?

No. Being bilingual alone does not qualify someone to work as an interpreter or translator. Both roles require specific skills and knowledge gained through professional training and experience.

Many people grow up in bilingual households but may not have the combination of skills, life experience, objectivity, and broad general knowledge needed to interpret or translate. Even people with language degrees may not have the knowledge of cultural differences, idioms, technical terms, or slang needed to provide competent interpreting or translation services.

Who should not interpret?

Bilingual children, family members, and friends should not be asked to interpret. While they may speak the required language, they have not been trained in the skills, guidelines, and ethics required of our interpreters.

Interpretation requests

What type of interpreter should I ask for?

Please let us know in your initial request if you have any specific interpreting needs or requirements. For example, you may prefer a male or female interpreter or need someone who speaks a specific dialect, such as Moroccan Arabic. This information will help us choose the best interpreter for your request.

How much notice do I need to give for my interpretation request?

Ideally, submit your request 2–3 business days before you need an interpreter. However, we do our best to accommodate all requests and understand that urgent needs may arise with less notice.

We may apply an additional fee to expedited requests.

What happens once I submit my interpretation request?

Once we receive your request, we will match you with an interpreter based on your needs. After we confirm the match, we will send you an email with the interpreter’s name and contact information.

How much does interpretation cost?

Please visit our Pricing page for a detailed overview of our service costs.

Translation requests

What happens once I submit my translation request?

Once we receive your request, we will send you a translation quote. After you confirm the cost and delivery date, we will begin the translation. Once it is ready, we will notify you.

Note: The delivery date may change if we do not receive your confirmation in a timely manner.

How long does it take to translate a document?

The timeline depends on the complexity of the document. However, we aim to complete translation requests within 2–3 business days after you confirm the quote.

Accounts and policies

Do I need to create an account to submit an interpretation or translation request?

No. You can submit your request as a guest. However, please use an active email address so you can receive confirmation of your request.

What is the cancellation policy?

We have a 48-business-hour cancellation policy. Unless otherwise specified, we charge clients for requests cancelled with less than 48 business hours’ notice.
